The Design Journey: From Concept to Hallmarked Masterpiece
Follow the visual guide or read on for a detailed breakdown of each stage of the journey.
A design process built on built on precision and collaboration
Phase 1: The Vision and Consultation
- Enquiry & Consultation: We discuss your ideas, budget, and timeline to ensure we are the right fit for your vision.
- Gemstone Selection: Whether we source a rare stone for you or you provide a cherished family heirloom, we finalise the "heart" of the piece.
Note: For customer-supplied stones, we provide a professional assessment and acceptance note before work begins.
Phase 2: The Design and Approval
- Design & Sketches: Our designers create sketches and CAD renderings, with revisions until the design is exactly as you imagined.
- Timeframe: Usually 3–10 days.
- Formal Quote: Once the design is settled, we provide a full scope of work and a formal quote.
- Deposit: Your order is officially placed, and the journey from paper to gold begins.
Phase 3: The Craft and Creation
- Sourcing & Making: Rare Welsh gold is allocated and your piece is hand-forged or cast by our master goldsmith.
- Timeframe: Typically 2–6 weeks.
- Setting & Finishing: Stones are expertly set, followed by the final polish and any custom engraving.
- Hallmarking: Your piece is sent for official hallmarking to certify its purity and Welsh gold content.
- Timeframe: Often 3–10 working days.
Phase 4: Completion and Beyond
- Quality Control: A final inspection and professional photography of your piece.
- Dispatch or Collection: Your jewellery is ready for its forever home, fully tracked and insured.
- Aftercare: Our relationship doesn’t end at delivery; we provide ongoing support to keep your piece beautiful for a lifetime.
Added Features for Peace of Mind
- Urgent Deadlines: Working toward a specific date? We confirm feasibility and guarantee timelines before any deposit is taken.
- The Design Retainer: To begin this process, we ask for a £200 retainer which covers our designer's time and CAD work (see details below).
We begin with a design retainer of £200, which covers initial sketches and CAD renderings at a rate of £25 per hour. This ensures you have a near-perfect visual of your piece before our goldsmith begins the forge. Any remaining credit from your retainer is then applied directly to the final cost of your jewellery.
The cost of this process is £25
per hour for the designer’s time and the same per hour for the CAD
work. We ask for a payment of £200 in advance of the work described
above. If necessary, further monthly top-up payments will be required until
the design has been settled, and any remaining
credit will be taken off the cost of the finished piece. In the
unlikely event of a client not proceeding with the commission then the
amount in credit, after the design costs, will be refunded.
An hour’s face-to-face design consultation with one of our Hatton Garden or our Yorkshire-based goldsmiths is available by arrangement, at a cost of £60 per hour (plus £15 per 15 minutes thereafter).

A Case Study: The Gold Standard
Aur Cymru is the “Rolls Royce” or “Gold Standard” of bespoke jewellery, pun intended. I am a Welshman and my wife is Japanese so for our 50th wedding anniversary I wanted to give her something personal and special that celebrated the bond between us and our respective cultures. I decided on a bespoke wedding ring made of 100% Welsh gold incorporating symbols of Wales (dragon and love knot) and Japan (Mt. Fuji and the rising sun). Combining such diverse symbols into a design that would be elegant on a lady’s hand was challenging but Geoffrey, Liz and Neela at Aur Cymru enthusiastically rose to that challenge taking my rudimentary concept and turning it into a beautiful work of art that is absolutely adored by my wife. The whole process from start to finish was professional, yet warm as if we were family, and reflected the great pride they take in their work and customer satisfaction. Thank you Geoffrey, Liz and Neela for fulfilling my dream.Terry, Japan
