The Art of the Hammered Finish
Whilst many clients adore our rings with a classic smooth finish, others seek something a little more unusual. We are therefore delighted to introduce a range of beautiful hammered finishes - a mark of true artisanal craftsmanship that transforms a smooth metal surface into a faceted landscape, catching the light in a way no machine-polished piece can.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Texture
A hammered finish is defined as an "all-over decorative treatment" created by repeated manual strikes to the metal surface.
To achieve this, our jewellers place each piece on a steel bench block or anvil. Using a specific type of hammer, they strike the metal with consistent pressure and rhythm. Each blow creates a unique "facet" or "divot," ensuring that no two rings are ever exactly alike.
The Artisanal Difference Vs Cast Jewellery
While other jewellery often uses textures that look uniform and flat, hand-hammered finishes are identifiable by the slight, organic variations in the depth and placement of each strike. (Source: Lang Antiques University)
Strength in Every Strike
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the act of hammering actually compresses the internal grain of the metal. This process, known as work-hardening, makes the gold denser and more durable than a standard cast piece. This ensures your jewellery is not only beautiful but structurally resilient for a lifetime of wear. (Source: The Jeweller Shop Encyclopaedia)
